Hatfield was established by the Wesleyan Methodist Society on the original farm Koedoespoort in 1905 and laid out as a residential suburb by land surveryor W R Lanham. It was named Hatfield House, Herfordshire, England, home of the Second Earl of Selborne, British High Commissioner in South Africa and Governor of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State. For decades Hatfield formed the eastern boundary of built up Pretoria.
Over the years Hatfield developed as a commercial satellite of the University of Pretoria, providing shops, boutiques, banks and fast foods. The accelerated development of a thriving retail sector occurred during the late 1980s and the 1990s. It is now a flourishing commercial and nightlife centre of the city, well-known for its office parks, quality shops and restaurants.
Hatfield Square is the number 1 student hangout in South Africa and is a place where both young and old come together. Over the years a large variety of well-known artists have performed in Hatfield Square. Some of the artists who have performed on our stage include Arno Carstens, Jesse Clegg, Fokofpolisiekar, Mrs. B , Die Heuwels Fantasties, Goldfish, aKing, Van Fokken Tasties, Jack Parrow, El Hombre Jokes, Slugs of War, Zebra & Giraffe, DJ Fresh, Goodluck, Black Coffee, Koos Kombuis, Dozi, Peter Smith, Beeskraal, Nothing Alike, Dixie Hillbillies, Joe F, The Parlotones, and Prime Circle. Live rugby and soccer matches are screened weekly on the big screen and there are monthly live events in the Square.
Hatfield Square is conveniently situated withing walking distance from the Hatfield Gautrain station, University of Pretoria, LC de Villiers stadium, Hatfield Plaza and Virgin Active gym.
